Carl-Harry Stålhane vase
This ceramic vase, designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1960s, embodies key principles of Scandinavian modernism through its elegant proportions, restrained decoration, and focus on material quality and craftsmanship. The vase features a sculptural hourglass form, created by two opposing conical sections that meet at a narrow waist, resulting in a balanced and dynamic silhouette.
The surface is finished with a marbled off-white glaze, exhibiting subtle veining and tonal variations that evoke an organic, stone-like texture. A fine brown edge along the rim provides a delicate visual contrast, enhancing the refined character of the piece. The underside remains unglazed, revealing the ceramic body and bearing both the Rörstrand hallmark and Stålhane’s signature, confirming its authenticity.
Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920–1990) was a leading figure in Swedish ceramics, initially working as a decorator at Rörstrand before becoming its artistic director. He played a major role in defining mid-20th-century Swedish ceramic aesthetics through his blend of sculptural form and functional design, alongside innovative glazing techniques.
Rörstrand, established in 1726, is one of Europe’s most prestigious porcelain manufacturers. Following World War II, the company was instrumental in advancing Scandinavian modern ceramics, combining technical innovation with artistic excellence.
Measuring 7 cm in diameter and 23.5 cm in height (2.8 x 9.3 inches), the vase is in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations, preserving the integrity of its original design and finish.
