Carl-Harry Stålhane floor vase

This is a rare and tall ceramic floor vase designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. The form is upright and voluminous, tapering subtly from a wide, rounded base to a narrow, slightly flared neck. The proportions are classical yet modern, with a quiet elegance rooted in both Scandinavian minimalism and traditional vessel forms.

The glaze is a rich, textured blue with deep tonal variations ranging from steel blue to teal, interspersed with speckled and mottled layers that add depth and visual complexity. A band of greenish undertones traverses the midsection, introducing subtle horizontal rhythm to the surface. Near the mouth, the glaze thins slightly to reveal a faint halo of earthen tones, softening the transition to the rim. The surface is semi-gloss, allowing light to reflect gently off the subtle texture created by the glaze’s crystalline activity. The interior is glazed in a similar tone, contributing to the overall cohesion of the design.

The base bears the hallmark of Rörstrand, along with Carl-Harry Stålhane’s monogram “CHS” and the series designation “SDA” confirming authorship and origin. Stålhane was a central figure in 20th-century Swedish ceramic art, known for his technical expertise and for bridging sculptural form with serial production. His work from this period frequently explores restrained forms paired with advanced glazing techniques, often resulting in vases that stand as both functional and sculptural objects.
