Carl-Harry Stålhane vase
Rare ceramic vase designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. The vase displays Stålhane’s refined mastery of proportion and glaze technique, featuring a softly swollen body that tapers gracefully into a narrow neck with a slightly flared lip. The continuous contour gives the object a sculptural harmony, emphasizing the natural rhythm between volume and line.
The surface is coated in a rich brown glaze with subtle tonal variation ranging from warm chestnut to deep umber, revealing fine textural details that recall natural wood grain. The lower section transitions toward a darker base with hints of greenish undertones, achieved through Stålhane’s controlled kiln atmosphere. The glaze treatment is both restrained and expressive, typical of Rörstrand’s high-quality stoneware from this period.
Carl-Harry Stålhane, one of Sweden’s foremost postwar ceramic artists, worked at Rörstrand from the 1930s and became artistic director in the 1950s. His designs combine sculptural modernism with an artisanal sensitivity to glaze chemistry and form. This piece exemplifies his signature balance of precision and organic warmth.
