Information

This pair of ceramic vases was designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. Both vases are made in stoneware and display a restrained yet expressive mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic, where form, surface, and proportion are carefully balanced. Although closely related in character, the two vases differ slightly in height and profile, creating a complementary pairing rather than a strictly identical set.

The forms are elongated and organically tapered, with rounded bodies that narrow toward the neck. One vase features a softly flared, trumpet-like opening, while the other has a more slender, cylindrical neck. The surfaces are finished in a dark, matte glaze with deep black and charcoal tones, subtly transitioning into warm brown and iron-rich hues toward the lower sections. This tonal variation is typical of Stålhane’s work from this period and reflects his interest in depth, texture, and controlled glazing effects rather than uniform color.

Carl-Harry Stålhane was one of Rörstrand’s most influential designers and artistic directors during the mid-20th century. He played a key role in redefining Swedish studio and industrial ceramics after the Second World War, introducing sculptural forms and experimental glazes while maintaining functional clarity. His work is often characterized by refined silhouettes, earthy color palettes, and a strong material presence, all of which are evident in this pair.

Rörstrand, founded in 1726, is one of Sweden’s oldest ceramic manufacturers and became internationally recognized in the 20th century for its collaboration with leading designers such as Stålhane. During the 1950s, the factory produced a wide range of artist-designed stoneware that bridged studio ceramics and serial production, resulting in objects that were both expressive and accessible.

The vases are in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of use consistent with age. These include small surface marks and subtle variations in the glaze, which are inherent to the firing process and contribute to their overall character. No structural damage or repairs are noted.

The smaller vase measures approximately 8.5 cm in diameter and 16 cm in height, corresponding to about 3.3 inches in diameter and 6.3 inches in height. The taller vase measures approximately 7.5 cm in diameter and 19 cm in height, equivalent to about 3.0 inches in diameter and 7.5 inches in height.
