Information
Rare neoclassical side table designed by Carl Malmsten during the 1920s and produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna, Bodafors Möbelfabrik, in Sweden. Executed in rosewood and birch, the table combines a circular top with an architectural base featuring carved details, decorative inlays, and carefully arranged wood veneers. The design reflects the Swedish interpretation of neoclassicism during the early 20th century, characterized by balanced proportions, classical ornamentation, and an emphasis on traditional cabinetmaking.

The circular tabletop features a richly figured wood veneer arranged in geometric sections, displaying warm amber-brown tones with darker areas of swirling grain. The rounded edge is finished with a contrasting band of dark rosewood, decorated with lighter wood inlays depicting stylized classical motifs, including symmetrical floral elements, geometric forms, and elongated ornamental details. The combination of contrasting wood species creates a continuous decorative pattern around the circumference of the table.

The tabletop is supported by four sculpted legs with square upper sections, subtly tapering profiles, and turned architectural details toward the base. Each leg incorporates vertical reeded decoration, carved rosettes beneath the tabletop, and stylized floral carvings near the feet. The legs are connected by a shaped lower stretcher with four concave sides, forming a symmetrical central structure. Its veneered surface displays a figured grain pattern that corresponds with the tabletop, while the curved perimeter creates a visual contrast to the otherwise rectilinear construction of the legs.

Carl Malmsten (1888–1972) was one of Sweden’s most influential furniture designers and an important representative of the Swedish Grace movement. His work combined traditional craftsmanship with a modern understanding of proportion, function, and material. During the 1920s, Swedish furniture design developed a distinctive interpretation of European neoclassicism, incorporating restrained classical references, carefully selected woods, and refined decorative details. Malmsten played a central role in this development, creating furniture that connected historical cabinetmaking traditions with contemporary Swedish interiors.

The table was produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna in Bodafors, one of Sweden’s established furniture manufacturing centers. The Bodafors factories were particularly associated with high-quality cabinetmaking and the production of furniture by prominent Swedish architects and designers. Their work during the early 20th century contributed to the development of Swedish furniture production, combining skilled craftsmanship with increasingly organized manufacturing methods. The collaboration between designers such as Malmsten and established manufacturers helped define the furniture associated with the Swedish Grace period.

The table is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use. The wooden surfaces retain their warm coloration, contrasting veneers, and decorative inlays, with light surface wear consistent with the age of the piece. The carved details and shaped lower stretcher remain well defined, preserving the original architectural character of the design.
