Ceiling lamp

Item number: 228419Category: Lighting
Information

This very rare ceiling lamp, designed by an unknown maker and produced in Norway, is a refined example of mid-century Nordic lighting. It exhibits the high level of craftsmanship and material sophistication characteristic of Norwegian design from the postwar period, despite its undocumented authorship.

The structure is crafted primarily from brass, with a central stem supporting three sculptural arms. Each arm curves upward in a balanced, symmetrical arrangement, terminating in upward-facing shades. The brass surfaces are polished but have developed a soft natural patina over time, enriching the overall tone with warm, nuanced variation while preserving their reflective qualities.

The three shades are fitted with perforated brass diffusers that allow subtle points of light to escape while directing most of the illumination upward. This results in a warm, ambient glow and a play of light and shadow around the ceiling and upper walls, enhancing the atmospheric quality of the room. Over the diffusers, fabric lampshades introduce a textural contrast to the brass, lending softness to the lamp’s otherwise metallic character. These shades, in a light neutral tone, further diffuse the light and contribute to the understated elegance of the fixture.

The proportions of the lamp are well-resolved, with a diameter of 65 cm and a drop of 60 cm, making it suitable for use over dining tables, in living rooms, or in entry spaces where architectural lighting is desired. The upward orientation of the shades and the open, radial layout of the arms give the lamp a floating, airy presence.

The condition is excellent vintage. The brass components show a consistent and appealing patina, with no structural flaws or damage. The shades are in very good condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.

Though the designer remains unidentified, the quality of fabrication and the refined interplay of materials suggest the involvement of a skilled Norwegian lighting manufacturer active in the mid-20th century, possibly aligned with firms like Arnold Wiig’s Fabrikker or Høvik Verk, known for their excellence in brasswork and modern forms.
