Dressing table
This rare Swedish vanity or lady’s desk, produced during the 1950s, is an elegant example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship. The piece is executed in ash with oak details and features a black glass tabletop that introduces a striking contrast to the warm tone of the wood. The round, adjustable mirror is framed in solid ash and supported by two tapering uprights with rounded finials, a detail that emphasizes the soft sculptural quality typical of the period’s refined woodworking.
The desk is constructed with a suspended cabinet containing one larger compartment and three smaller drawers, all fitted with turned wooden knobs. The frame is slender yet sturdy, with rounded legs joined by cross stretchers, reflecting the lightness and structural clarity associated with Scandinavian modern design. The natural grain of the ash is visible throughout, lending the surface a tactile warmth and subtle variation in tone.
This piece demonstrates the Scandinavian design ethos of the 1950s—functional, modest, and beautifully executed in honest materials. The combination of clear geometric composition and organic detailing shows the influence of architects and designers such as Carl Malmsten and Hans Wegner, whose work bridged traditional craftsmanship and modern form.
The vanity is in excellent vintage condition, showing minor signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation. Its proportions make it suitable for use both as a dressing table or a writing desk.
