Eric Sigfrid Persson lounge chair
This rare sunbed, designed by Eric Sigfrid Persson and produced by Vilmobler in Hörby, Sweden during the 1960s, stands out as a sculptural yet highly functional piece of Scandinavian modernist outdoor furniture. Its sinuous form combines ergonomic design with industrial materials, blending comfort and utility with striking visual appeal.
The sunbed’s continuous bent plywood seat shell is laminated in a warm yellow tone, elegantly flowing into an integrated canvas support that provides breathable comfort. A tailored light beige cushion follows the contours of the reclining surface, enhancing usability without detracting from the clean silhouette. The supporting steel frame, finished in a dark lacquer, doubles as sculpted armrests, echoing the organic lines of the seat while delivering structural integrity.
Notably, the rear of the frame is fitted with two large dark wooden wheels mounted on metal axles. These wheels provide mobility and reinforce the functional design ethos, while their robust, tactile presence balances the lightness of the plywood and canvas.
The reclining backrest adjusts through a toothed steel rod mechanism, allowing multiple comfortable positions for lounging. The original manufacturer’s label and patent mark attest to the piece’s provenance and quality.
Eric Sigfrid Persson’s architectural background is evident in the rational yet expressive design, and Vilmobler’s craftsmanship underscores the piece’s durability and refinement.
The sunbed remains in very good original condition, showing age-appropriate patina on the canvas and metal, with well-preserved cushions.
