Eric Sigfrid Persson lounge chair
This rare mid-century sunbed or lounge chair was designed by Eric Sigfrid Persson and produced in Sweden during the 1960s. The design reflects a utilitarian yet modernist approach to outdoor furniture, skillfully combining industrial materials with ergonomic functionality.
The frame is made from tubular aluminum bent into a continuous form that serves as both the support structure and integrated armrests. Finished in a pale grey paint, the metal frame harmonizes with the soft beige canvas upholstery. The chair is supported at the rear by two large solid wheels, facilitating easy repositioning, while the front rests on two fixed tubular legs. The wide wheelbase and slight forward angle lend the piece a stable, grounded stance.
The seat and backrest consist of a single padded canvas sling, stretched taut over the aluminum frame and securely fastened along its edges. Upholstered in neutral beige textile with integrated cushioning, the canvas is contoured to follow the natural reclining posture of the body. The adjustable backrest allows for multiple reclining angles, and a removable head cushion provides additional support. The original canvas shows light wear and a natural patina consistent with its age but remains intact and structurally sound.
A manufacturer’s label on the underside reads “Sitting / Vilmöbler / Made in Hörby / Sweden / Pat. and Pat. Pending” confirming its Swedish origin and registered design.
Eric Sigfrid Persson, an architect and designer known for his contributions to modern housing and functionalist design in Sweden, applied his practical and environmentally attuned approach to furniture with this piece. Designed for domestic gardens, terraces, or institutional spaces, the sunbed combines mobility and comfort within a clean-lined, modernist aesthetic.
The lounge chair remains in very good vintage condition, with a structurally stable frame and minor surface wear to the paint. The fabric has aged evenly without significant defects, and all adjustment mechanisms function properly.
The dimensions are 85 cm wide, 150 cm deep, and 75 cm high, with a seat height of 18 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 33.5 inches wide, 59.1 inches deep, 29.5 inches high, and a seat height of 7.1 inches.
