Information

This rare pair of armchairs is attributed to Erik Chambert and was produced by Chamberts Möbelfabriker in Norrköping, Sweden during the 1940s. The chairs are constructed from solid mahogany, featuring seats, backrests, and arm pads upholstered in black leather. The design reflects a refined interpretation of Scandinavian functionalism with clear influences from the Swedish Grace movement, marked by sculptural woodwork and a strong architectural presence.

The mahogany frames exhibit a warm medium-brown tone with subtly curved forms and softly rounded edges. The vertical stiles extend seamlessly into the rear legs, creating a continuous line from floor to the top of the high backrest. The stretchers, especially the gently bowed and finely shaped central front stretcher, enhance structural stability while maintaining visual lightness. Black leather upholstery is secured with domed brass rivets outlining the seat and backrest, adding both decorative and utilitarian detail.

Both chairs show condition consistent with their age. The leather displays expected use, including creases, light surface marks, and patina. The wood frames remain structurally sound, preserving sharp joinery and clean profile lines. The padded leather armrests retain their form with minor edge wear.

Erik Chambert was a prominent Swedish designer and architect noted for his refined furniture and interiors during the early to mid-20th century. His work combines meticulous craftsmanship with modernist influences. Chamberts Möbelfabriker, the family-operated manufacturer, was responsible for producing many of his designs, known for their high-quality execution.

These armchairs exemplify a transitional moment in Swedish design, bridging late pre-war elegance with emerging modernist simplicity.

The dimensions are 63 centimeters wide, 72 centimeters deep, and 102.5 centimeters high, with a seat height of 44 centimeters (approximately 24.8 by 28.3 by 40.4 inches, seat height 17.3 inches).
