Erik Chambert attrib. armchairs
This rare pair of armchairs is attributed to Swedish architect and designer Erik Chambert and was produced by Chamberts Möbelfabrik in Norrköping, Sweden, during the 1940s. The design exemplifies a transitional period between pre-war classicism and emerging Scandinavian modernism, combining artisanal craftsmanship with a restrained functionalist form.
The frames are constructed from solid mahogany, displaying a warm reddish-brown hue and a subtly curved profile. The arms flare gently outward at the front and feature carved contours and refined joinery that underscore the hand-crafted nature of the pieces. The chairs rest on squared front legs and slightly splayed back legs, connected by gently curved stretchers with sculptural rounded joints, revealing precise and thoughtful woodworking.
Upholstered in original black leather on the seat, backrest, and arm pads, the chairs incorporate closely spaced darkened brass upholstery tacks that trace the contours of the frames in a continuous line. The high backrest is slightly tilted and gently concave at the top edge, offering ergonomic support while adding sculptural refinement.
Erik Chambert (1902–1988) was an architect and designer active in the early to mid-20th century, noted for bridging Swedish functionalism with classical furniture-making traditions. He frequently collaborated with Chamberts Möbelfabriker, a family-founded workshop in Norrköping known for producing high-quality custom furniture in limited runs, especially recognized for elegant, understated designs of the 1930s and 1940s.
This pair of armchairs is in good original condition. The leather shows moderate creasing and patina consistent with age and use, with no significant damage or repairs. The mahogany frames have been lightly cleaned, displaying consistent color and finish, with minor wear in areas of contact. The brass tacks have naturally darkened over time, contributing to the chairs’ character.
Each chair measures 63 cm wide, 72 cm deep, and 102.5 cm high (approximately 24.8 x 28.3 x 40.4 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches).
