Information

This rare freestanding desk, designed by Erik Riisager Hansen and produced by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark during the 1950s, is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship and design.

Constructed in richly grained rosewood, the desk showcases dramatic swirling patterns of dark and light streaks that emphasize its sculptural presence and tactile elegance. The rectangular tabletop features a subtle raised lip along the rear and sides, providing both visual definition and practical function, while the surface appears to float lightly above the supporting frame, lending the piece a sense of lightness despite its substantial materials.

The cabinetry is asymmetrically positioned on the right beneath the desktop, containing three flush-front drawers with integrated wooden pulls. The grain on the drawer fronts is meticulously aligned to continue the organic flow of the rosewood veneer. Sharply tapered legs descend from each corner, adding vertical elegance and a minimal footprint. The desk’s fully finished rosewood back allows it to stand freely in a room without compromising its aesthetics.

The desk remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age-related wear and a careful restoration that preserves the original finish’s integrity and enhances the wood’s natural color and luster. The joinery is precise, and the piece retains a crisp, architecturally composed appearance.

Erik Riisager Hansen, though less internationally known, made significant contributions to Danish modern design through his precise proportions and material sensitivity. His collaboration with Haslev Møbelsnedkeri, a workshop renowned for high-quality craftsmanship and strong ties to Denmark’s leading designers, resulted in timeless furniture pieces like this desk.

The dimensions are 160 cm wide, 75.5 cm deep, and 73 cm high (approximately 63 x 29.7 x 28.7 inches), making it a substantial yet elegant work suited for a refined Scandinavian interior.
