Estrid Ericson jar
This cylindrical lidded jar was designed by Estrid Ericson and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the mid-20th century. Crafted from pewter with brass accents, the jar features a textured basket-weave pattern inspired by Captain Sigfrid Ericson’s Panama hat, combining functional simplicity with decorative detail characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century design. The domed lid is topped with a small wooden handle mounted horizontally on a metal support, adding a subtle organic touch to the overall form.
The pewter surface displays a soft, aged patina with natural oxidation and wear consistent with its vintage age. The brass trim around the lid’s rim and base contrasts warmly against the cooler pewter, highlighting the precise craftsmanship typical of Svenskt Tenn’s artisanal metalwork. The interior is finished in smooth, unadorned pewter, providing a clean contrast to the textured exterior.
Estrid Ericson, founder of Svenskt Tenn, was a seminal figure in Swedish design, known for merging functionalism with decorative elegance. Under her guidance, Svenskt Tenn became a focal point for Swedish modernism, collaborating with renowned designers such as Josef Frank. This jar exemplifies Ericson’s skill in infusing everyday objects with artistry while maintaining practical use.
Svenskt Tenn, established in 1924 in Stockholm, gained international recognition for its high-quality pewter and later textile designs. The company played a key role in shaping Scandinavian modernism by producing objects that combined traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.
The jar measures 11 cm in diameter and 12.5 cm in height (4.3 x 4.9 inches). The underside bears the Svenskt Tenn mark, authenticating its origin and period.
