Information

This lidded ceramic vase was designed by Eva Jancke-Björk and produced by Bobergs Fajansfabrik, located in Gefle, Sweden, during the 1930s. The vase is crafted from cream-colored earthenware and features a fine crackle glaze covering its surface. Its form is vertically oriented and rounded, with an integrated lid that continues the design seamlessly. The surface decoration is notably sculptural, presenting stylized vine and flower motifs applied in high relief. These organic shapes wrap around the vessel’s body, culminating in open blossoms and tubular projections, while the lid carries forward the decorative theme with curling elements and a pronounced upward-pointing flower bud.

The exterior glaze presents a pale ivory tone, characterized by a dense network of craquelure and subtle variations in shade, which are hallmarks of Bo Fajans’s stoneware production in the interwar period. The interior is finished with a contrasting celadon green glaze, visible at the neck when the lid is removed. The base of the vase bears the factory’s stamped mark along with an impressed model number. Additional handwritten numerals on the underside likely correspond to production or cataloging information.

Eva Jancke-Björk (1882–1981) was a prominent Swedish ceramist and designer whose work spanned ceramics and textiles. She was active in the early 20th century and is recognized for blending influences from Swedish folk art and the Art Nouveau movement. Her designs often reflect a dedication to craftsmanship and expressive, organic forms. During her tenure at Bo Fajansfabrik, Jancke-Björk produced a variety of ceramics that balanced decorative elements with practical usability, as seen in this vase.

The condition of the vase is very good, with no visible cracks, chips, or restorations. The glaze remains stable, and all sculptural details are preserved intact. The dimensions of the piece measure 25 centimeters in diameter and 32 centimeters in height (9.8 by 12.6 inches).
