Finn Juhl attrib. dining table
This rare dining table is attributed to the celebrated Danish designer Finn Juhl and was produced by Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. Reflecting the principles of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, the table combines organic detailing with architectural clarity, a hallmark of Juhl’s design philosophy.
The tabletop is crafted from richly grained rosewood, featuring rounded corners and beveled edges that soften the otherwise rectilinear form. The grain structure varies dynamically, with colors ranging from warm amber hues to deeper brown and black striations, emphasizing the natural beauty of the wood. This variation in the grain enhances the visual richness of the piece, drawing attention to the wood’s organic character. The substantial top is paired with four tapered cylindrical legs made of stained elm, darkened to complement the rosewood. The junction between the tabletop and the legs is seamlessly executed, with subtle joinery and inset brackets that reinforce both the structural integrity and the visual flow of the design.
The proportions of the table are thoughtfully designed for functionality and aesthetics. It measures 179 cm in length, 89 cm in width, and 70 cm in height, which converts to approximately 70.5 inches in length, 35 inches in width, and 27.6 inches in height. The overall profile of the table is both elegant and robust, making it suitable for use in both domestic and formal dining settings.
Finn Juhl (1912–1989) is widely regarded as a pioneering figure in Danish modern design. Known for his sculptural furniture forms and innovative use of materials, Juhl was instrumental in shaping mid-century Danish design. Though this table is attributed rather than formally documented as a Juhl design, it clearly reflects his design language, particularly in the harmonious balance of organic forms and structural clarity. Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik, a prominent furniture producer in Denmark, worked closely with leading designers like Juhl to produce finely crafted pieces that exemplified Danish modernism.
The table is in very good condition, with only minor wear consistent with its age and use. The finish remains rich and well-preserved, while the structure is sound, further confirming the table’s enduring quality.
