Finn Juhl attrib. dining table
This is a rare dining table attributed to Finn Juhl, produced in Denmark during the 1950s. It showcases the hallmark characteristics of Danish mid-century modern design, particularly the organic formal language and refined structural detailing associated with Juhl’s approach to furniture.
The table is constructed from solid teak, a favored material in Scandinavian furniture of the period due to its strength and richly grained surface. The top is softly rectangular with rounded corners and an organically contoured edge profile that contributes to its sculptural quality. The surface displays a consistent warm tone with a pronounced horizontal wood grain, indicative of well-preserved teak veneer or solid stock.
The underframe incorporates signature Juhl elements, including a pronounced arch on each side formed by the apron, visually lightening the structure while ensuring stability. The curved cutouts at the corners between the tabletop and the legs contribute to a sense of floating elegance, an illusion commonly explored by Juhl. The legs are slender and tapering, emphasizing verticality and rhythm.
Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was one of the most influential figures in Danish modernism, known for integrating sculptural form with functional rigor. Trained as an architect, he introduced organic curves and expressive detailing into furniture, often in contrast to the more rectilinear work of his contemporaries. Although this table is attributed rather than firmly documented, its construction and design language closely align with Juhl’s practice in the early 1950s, particularly in his pieces produced for master cabinetmakers and smaller manufacturers.
The table remains in good vintage condition with small signs of usage, such as light surface wear and minor fading, appropriate to its age and use. It retains a warm, well-maintained finish with minimal restoration.
