Finn Juhl dining chairs
This set of rare dining chairs, model BO 63, was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by Bovirke in Denmark in 1952. The frames are crafted from beech wood, a material commonly used in Scandinavian furniture design for its durability and fine grain. The chairs exhibit Juhl’s signature organic forms, with gently curved backrests and elegantly tapered legs. The rear legs extend seamlessly into the backrest supports, forming a continuous, flowing structure that enhances both stability and visual lightness. The seats and backrests have been reupholstered in black leather, providing a smooth contrast against the warm tones of the beech wood. The backrest features a subtly curved shape, designed to provide ergonomic support, while the seat is slightly contoured for comfort. The horizontal crossbars between the legs add reinforcement to the frame while maintaining an open, airy design.
Finn Juhl was a leading figure in Danish modernism, recognized for his sculptural approach to furniture that blended traditional craftsmanship with organic and expressive forms. His work played a crucial role in establishing Danish design as a global movement in the mid-20th century. Bovirke, the producer of these chairs, was known for manufacturing high-quality furniture based on Juhl’s innovative designs, often characterized by their refined detailing and exceptional craftsmanship. This model reflects the principles of Scandinavian modern design, emphasizing functionality, material integrity, and sculptural beauty.
Each chair measures 50 cm in width, 56 cm in depth, and 81 cm in height (19.7 x 22 x 31.9 inches), with a seat height of 43.5 cm (17.1 inches). The set remains in excellent structural condition, with the wooden frames retaining their original finish and the leather upholstery newly restored to match the chair’s original aesthetic.
