Finn Juhl armchairs
This is a rare and highly refined set of six armchairs designed by Danish architect and designer Finn Juhl and produced by Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs are executed in solid rosewood, a material Juhl frequently used to accentuate the sculptural qualities of his furniture. The design is characteristic of Juhl’s organic modernism, with gently curved frames, softly tapered legs, and floating upholstered elements that suggest a sense of lightness and ergonomic sophistication.
The chairs feature generously curved backrests and oval seat cushions newly reupholstered in a light wool fabric. The upholstery follows the original specifications with subtle piping and a tight fit, complementing the dark, expressive grain of the rosewood frames. The armrests, carved with a slight upward curve and integrated notches at the joint, emphasize Juhl’s attention to tactile detail and functional elegance. The construction showcases advanced joinery techniques and a sculptural interplay between solid and void, highlighting the craftsmanship for which Søren Willadsen’s workshop was known.
Finn Juhl was one of the leading figures in the development of Danish modern design. He trained as an architect and applied architectural principles to furniture, often emphasizing form over strict function. His collaboration with Søren Willadsen began in the late 1940s, and together they developed some of Juhl’s most iconic and complex seating forms, pushing the limits of both wood and upholstery construction. Willadsen’s workshop was one of the few capable of executing Juhl’s demanding designs with the precision required. This particular model reflects Juhl’s departure from rectilinear forms toward more organic and anthropomorphic structures.
The chairs are in excellent restored condition, with newly applied wool upholstery and professionally cleaned and preserved rosewood frames showing minor signs of age-appropriate wear.
Each chair measures 66.5 cm in width, 68 cm in depth, and 94 cm in height, with a seat height of 41 cm (26.2 x 26.8 x 37 inches, seat height 16.1 inches).
