Information

This very rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Flemming Lassen and produced by cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær in Denmark during the 1940s. The design features a sculptural and organic silhouette, a hallmark of Lassen’s approach to modernist design focused on comfort. The gently curved backrest and integrated armrests create an inviting, cocoon-like form, which is complemented by the softly sloping lines of the profile. This smooth, flowing shape emphasizes both aesthetic beauty and functionality, making the chairs particularly well-suited for comfort.

The frames are made from solid oak, providing a strong structural foundation while offering a natural warmth that complements the soft, tactile qualities of the upholstery. The legs are slightly tapered and splayed, reinforcing the mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic. These subtle details emphasize the timeless elegance of the piece, with the oak’s grain adding texture and depth to the overall look.

The chairs have been reupholstered in Gabriel Savak plain fabric, originally designed by Tove Kindt-Larsen. This upholstery choice enhances the texture and softness of the chairs while respecting the historical integrity of the original design. The neutral tone of the fabric creates a subtle contrast with the oak frame, allowing the sculptural qualities of the design to take center stage.

Flemming Lassen was a key figure in Danish modernism and the functionalist movement, known for his emphasis on comfort and organic forms. His designs often blend practicality with visual appeal, resulting in pieces that are both functional and deeply aesthetic. Jacob Kjær, the producer, was a respected Danish cabinetmaker known for his exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to high-quality materials, ensuring that each piece produced under his name was made to the highest standards.

The chairs embody the core principles of mid-century Scandinavian design, focusing on simplicity, craftsmanship, and functionality. The dimensions of each chair are 72 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 75 cm in height (28.3 inches wide, 29.5 inches deep, and 29.5 inches high), with a seat height of 40 cm (15.7 inches). The chairs are in excellent condition, having undergone careful restoration that ensures their longevity while preserving their historical and design integrity.
