Folke Bensow (1886–1971) was a Swedish architect and designer known for his work in architecture, furniture, and cast-iron garden design during the early 20th century. He is particularly associated with Swedish Grace and 1920s classicism, where refined proportions, decorative restraint, and a strong sense of material were central. Alongside his architectural practice, he designed garden furniture and park benches in cast iron, produced by Näfvekvarns Styckebruk, which remain among his most recognized works today.

Biography

Bror Folke Bensow was born in Gothenburg in 1886. After graduating from upper secondary school in 1904, he studied architecture at Chalmers University of Technology until 1909. He continued his education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen between 1910 and 1911, and later at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 1912.

Between 1915 and 1930, Bensow ran his own architectural practice in Stockholm while also working as a furniture and object designer. He participated in several important exhibitions, including the Home Exhibition at Liljevalchs in 1917, Föreningen Verkstaden’s exhibition in 1920, the Jubilee Exhibition in Gothenburg in 1923, the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design exhibition in Helsinki in 1924, and the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930.

One of Bensow’s most important architectural works was the textile industry building Strykjärnet in Norrköping, designed in 1917. The building is considered one of the earliest examples of 1920s classicism in Sweden and became significant for the development of Swedish architecture during the period. Its refined composition and distinctive form led Carl Milles to describe it as “Sweden’s most beautiful factory.”

Bensow also made an important contribution to Swedish design through his cast-iron garden furniture and park benches, produced by Näfvekvarns Styckebruk. These designs combined durable industrial production with a refined decorative language, making them suitable for both public spaces and private gardens. They are today appreciated as elegant examples of Swedish early modern outdoor furniture.
