Frits Henningsen sofa
The upholstery is divided into two sections, with a softly padded seat and a button-tufted backrest featuring leather-covered buttons arranged in a regular pattern. The rounded front edge of the seat contrasts with the more defined lines of the oak structure. Narrow wooden edges follow the curved upper sections of the backrest and armrests, while closely spaced brass rivets secure and outline the leather upholstery. The rear of the sofa is fully upholstered in leather, with vertical seams defining the construction of the back panel. The combination of warm oak, cognac-colored leather and brass detailing reflects the material-focused approach characteristic of Danish cabinetmaking during the interwar period.
Frits Henningsen (1889–1965) was a Danish furniture designer and master cabinetmaker whose work contributed to the development of modern Danish furniture design. After training as a cabinetmaker, he established his own workshop in Copenhagen in 1915, where he designed and produced furniture with an emphasis on craftsmanship, carefully considered proportions and traditional construction methods. Henningsen maintained a relatively independent approach to furniture production, preferring the close relationship between designer and cabinetmaker that allowed for detailed control over materials, upholstery and finishing.
His furniture designs often combined elements of classical European seating traditions with the emerging functionalist ideals of the early 20th century. During the 1930s, his work increasingly demonstrated a balance between sculptural forms, ergonomic considerations and restrained ornamentation. This sofa illustrates that development through its curved, integrated backrest and armrests, precise upholstery detailing and relatively simple wooden support structure. The design represents the transition from traditional upholstered furniture toward the more refined and functional forms associated with Danish modernism.
The sofa is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with its age. The oak frame retains a warm, natural patina with slight surface wear and tonal variations. The newly upholstered Niger leather displays natural grain characteristics and subtle variations in color and texture. The brass rivets follow the contours of the frame and provide a contrasting decorative detail. A pair of matching easy chairs designed and produced by Frits Henningsen during the same period is also available.
