Gunnar Ander side table

This small side table was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden. The piece illustrates Ander’s distinctive approach to combining metalwork with functional elegance, and it reflects the refined material sensibility typical of Ystad Metall’s mid-century production.

The table is composed of three primary elements: a slender vertical rod in black-painted metal, a polished brass tray, and a solid granite base. The rod serves as the central support, linking the base and tray in a clean, linear configuration. The circular tray at the top is crafted from solid brass with a golden, polished finish. It functions as both a surface and a removable element, featuring a centrally mounted loop handle made of the same brass. This handle is not only decorative but also practical, enabling easy lifting and repositioning of the tray. The contrast between the luminous brass and the darkened stem provides visual balance and a sense of lightness.

The base is formed from an octagonal block of black and grey speckled granite. Its substantial weight provides stability, while the geometric shape and natural stone texture offer a grounding counterpoint to the metallic upper components. The interplay between the warm brass, cool stone, and black rod results in a visually restrained yet materially rich design.

The condition of the table is very good. The brass tray retains its reflective quality, showing only minor surface marks typical of vintage use. The granite base is free from chips or cracks, and the black-painted rod remains intact with minimal wear.

Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish architect and designer known for his work in lighting, furniture, and decorative arts. He collaborated extensively with Ystad Metall, a prominent Swedish metalworks company, where he designed a range of objects that paired utility with stylistic flair. This side table exemplifies his skill in harmonizing sculptural form and utilitarian function.

The table measures 21.5 cm in diameter (8.5 inches) and 60.5 cm in height (23.8 inches), making it ideal as a light occasional table, drink stand, or decorative accent in a modern or mid-century interior.
