Gunnar Ander side table
This small and refined side table was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. It is a quintessential example of mid-century Scandinavian design, balancing elegant simplicity with functional purpose through a clear and harmonious material composition.
The table features a slender, vertical stem in black lacquered metal that rises from a round weighted base, providing stability and a sense of lightness. At the top, a polished brass tray with a gently raised edge serves as the tabletop, its warm tone contrasting beautifully with the dark stem. A delicate circular handle in brass crowns the piece, adding a sculptural element that is both decorative and practical, allowing the table to be easily moved or repositioned. The overall silhouette is restrained yet sophisticated, with the minimal geometry and thoughtful detailing characteristic of Ander’s design language.
Gunnar Ander was a prominent Swedish designer whose work for Ystad Metall helped define Scandinavian modernism’s understated elegance. Known for his clean lines, refined proportions, and subtle decorative gestures, Ander designed a range of lighting, furniture, and decorative objects that combined functionality with sculptural presence.
