Gunnar Asplund wall lamp
This rare and large outdoor wall lamp was designed by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1940s. It is an early example of Scandinavian functionalist lighting, combining architectural precision with the artisanal qualities of handcrafted glass. The lamp reflects Asplund’s refined design language, rooted in simplicity, proportion, and practicality, principles that made him one of the leading figures of Nordic modernism. ASEA, one of Sweden’s most prominent lighting manufacturers of the 20th century, was known for collaborating with leading architects and designers to develop lighting solutions that balanced industrial production with artisanal detailing.
The lamp is constructed from lacquered steel with a dark, aged patina that bears marks of use and exposure, contributing to its historical character. The original mouthblown glass shade is slightly irregular in form, displaying soft curves and subtle air bubbles typical of handcrafted glass from the period. Its translucent quality diffuses light gently while maintaining a sculptural presence, and the organic dome-like silhouette contrasts beautifully with the geometric simplicity of the steel wall bracket. Together, these elements create a functional yet expressive piece of architectural lighting.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of age, use, and patina, which emphasize its authenticity and material integrity.
