Information

This rare and large outdoor wall lamp was designed by the influential Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1940s. It is a significant example of early modern Scandinavian lighting design, combining a functionalist approach with architectural precision. The lamp features a robust steel structure paired with a large, organic mouth-blown glass shade. The glass has a soft, irregular form with subtle curvature and natural air bubbles, characteristic of traditional glassblowing techniques. Its slightly tinted, translucent surface diffuses light gently while showcasing the artisanal craftsmanship behind its production.

The steel wall bracket has a geometric, hexagonal backplate and a gently curved arm that supports the bulb housing and shade. Over time, the metal has developed a distinctive patina, reflecting both its age and original outdoor use. The interplay between the industrial character of the steel and the sculptural, fluid form of the glass embodies the Scandinavian modernist ideal of balancing functionality with material beauty.

Gunnar Asplund (1885–1940) was one of the most influential architects and designers in Sweden, known for blending classical architectural principles with the emerging language of modernism. His work, including the Stockholm Public Library and Skogskyrkogården cemetery, shaped the course of Scandinavian design in the 20th century. ASEA, the producer of this lamp, was one of Sweden’s leading manufacturers of electrical equipment and lighting during this period. Their collaborations with architects and designers helped define the visual language of Scandinavian public and residential spaces in the mid-century era.

This piece represents a refined intersection of architecture, craftsmanship, and industrial design. Its materials, proportions, and detailing make it an important example of early modern Scandinavian outdoor lighting, both functional and sculptural in character.
