Gunnar Nylund vase
This glass vase was designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Strömbergshyttans Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1950s. It features a rounded, slightly elongated oval form composed of a thick clear glass exterior that encases a deep blue internal shape. The contrast between the transparent outer layer and the rich blue core creates a striking visual effect typical of mid-century Scandinavian glass design.
The vase is crafted using the Sommerso technique, which involves layering colored glass within a thicker, clear glass structure. This method enhances the sense of depth and optical play, emphasizing the fluidity and organic nature of the form. The surface is smooth and polished, with a small, slightly recessed opening at the top. The base retains its original Strömbergshyttan label, confirming its authenticity.
Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) was a notable designer recognized for his contributions to ceramics and glass. While primarily associated with Rörstrand, his glass designs for Strömbergshyttan similarly emphasize organic forms, subtle color transitions, and fine craftsmanship. Strömbergshyttans Glasbruk, founded in the early 20th century, was esteemed for producing high-quality glassware, especially in crystal-clear and layered glass objects.
The vase is in excellent condition, showing only minor age-related wear, such as slight surface marks visible upon close inspection. It measures 11 centimeters in width, 7 centimeters in depth, and 19.5 centimeters in height (approximately 4.3 x 2.8 x 7.7 inches).
