Gunnar Nylund vases
This set of nine glass vases was designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Strömbergshyttans Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1950s. Each vase is crafted using the overlay technique, where an amber-colored inner layer is encased within a clear outer layer of thick-walled glass. The forms are distinctly organic and asymmetrical, with fluid contours and softly curved edges that lend the vases a sculptural and dynamic quality.
The condition of the vases is well preserved, with no visible cracks or chips. The glass surfaces retain a glossy finish, and the original Strömbergshyttan sticker remains affixed to at least one of the pieces, confirming their authenticity. These details underline the care in production and the durability of the materials used.
Gunnar Nylund was a significant figure in Scandinavian design, particularly known for his work with ceramics and glass during the mid-20th century. His contributions helped shape the Swedish decorative arts landscape, emphasizing minimalist yet expressive design. Strömbergshyttan, with its long history as a producer of high-quality crystal, was recognized for its skilled craftsmanship and the elegant simplicity of its forms, which align closely with Nylund’s design principles.
The vases exemplify mid-century Scandinavian design ideals through their organic shapes, superior material quality, and restrained but expressive aesthetic. Their varied sizes allow for versatile display options, whether arranged collectively or showcased individually. The tallest vase measures 9 by 5 by 28.5 centimeters (3.5 by 2 by 11.2 inches), while one of the smaller vases measures 7 by 4 by 11 centimeters (2.8 by 1.6 by 4.3 inches), offering a dynamic range of proportions within the set.
