Halvdan Pettersson bureau
The cabinet features an elongated oval body with softly rounded ends, supported by four slender, tapered mahogany legs with brass-capped feet. Three spacious drawers follow the curved profile of the cabinet, each fitted with two small, trapezoidal brass drop handles. The drawer fronts and curved exterior panels are upholstered in cream-colored imitation leather, secured with closely spaced decorative metal studs along the edges. The mahogany top displays a warm reddish-brown tone with visible natural grain patterns, complemented by a partially raised brass gallery along the rear and sides. The drawers have wooden interiors and traditional wooden construction.
Halvdan Pettersson was a Swedish furniture designer associated with the development of modern Scandinavian furniture during the mid-20th century. His Princess model demonstrates a combination of traditional cabinetmaking and modern design principles, with particular attention to curved surfaces, balanced proportions, and contrasting materials. The design incorporates elements of Swedish Modern and Scandinavian functionalism while retaining decorative features characteristic of more exclusive furniture production during the 1950s.
Tibro Möbelfabrik was based in Tibro, Sweden, a town with a longstanding tradition of furniture manufacturing and skilled cabinetmaking. During the mid-20th century, Tibro was an important center of Swedish furniture production, with manufacturers combining established woodworking techniques with the changing aesthetic preferences of the postwar period. The Princess model reflects this tradition through its shaped wooden construction, upholstered exterior surfaces, and carefully integrated metal fittings.
The bureau remains in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of age and use consistent with its period. Light surface wear and small marks are visible on the cream-colored imitation leather, while the mahogany retains its warm color and distinctive grain. The brass fittings display a natural aged patina. The overall construction and decorative detailing appear well preserved.
