Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamps
This ceiling lamp, model T-642, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies Jakobsson’s distinctive approach to light diffusion and material expression, combining a warm, atmospheric glow with a structured, modernist form.
Constructed entirely of brass, the lamp features a cylindrical shade made of evenly spaced horizontal brass louvers. These concentric rings create a layered, stepped profile that conceals the light source while allowing indirect illumination to softly filter through the gaps. This design results in controlled, subdued lighting—a hallmark of Jakobsson’s work, which often emphasizes ambiance over direct brightness.
The upper section consists of a simple cylindrical brass tube housing the electrical connections, and the brass ceiling canopy completes the minimal and coordinated aesthetic. The lamp’s sculptural form, rhythmic repetition, and functional glare control align closely with Scandinavian modernist principles of utility and refinement.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009), trained as a cabinetmaker and later as an architect, founded his lighting company in the early 1950s and gained recognition for innovative uses of brass, wood, and glass. His lighting designs are prized for their sculptural qualities and warm, inviting illumination, making them highly collectible today.
This lamp is in good vintage condition, showing age-related patina on the brass surfaces. It has been rewired for contemporary use. The vertical cord length allows for a total drop of up to 105 cm (approximately 41.3 inches), with the shade measuring 17 cm in diameter and 23 cm in height (6.7 by 9.1 inches).
