Information

This rare and distinctive wall lamp, model V-271, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson in the 1950s and manufactured by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden. The lamp is an exemplary piece of Scandinavian mid-century lighting, embodying the atmospheric and decorative lighting sensibility that Jakobsson is well known for.

The lamp features a vertical brass arm and a circular wall mount that supports a gently curved brass armature. The armature arches outward to suspend a cylindrical lampshade, which is densely covered in soft, cream-colored silk fringes arranged in cascading layers. When illuminated, the silk fringe diffuses the light, creating a gentle and warm ambiance with a shimmering effect. The light is softened, providing a soft glow rather than direct illumination, which enhances the tactile quality of the material and creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

The brass structure has developed a warm, golden patina over time, with minor surface marks and light signs of age-related wear visible, particularly around the rim of the brass shade. These imperfections are consistent with the lamp’s good vintage condition and do not affect its structural integrity or visual appeal. The patina adds character and depth, contributing to the piece’s overall charm.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a Swedish designer renowned for his work with atmospheric lighting. Trained as a cabinetmaker, Jakobsson was influenced by prominent designers such as Carl Malmsten and Gunnar Asplund, which shaped his design philosophy. He developed a unique language that blended functionalism with a poetic softness, often using materials like fringe, fabric, and thin metals to create diffuse, moody light.

Founded in the 1950s, Jakobsson’s company in Markaryd quickly became a hallmark of Scandinavian lighting design, known for its innovation, quality craftsmanship, and distinctive aesthetic. The V-271 model is a clear representation of Jakobsson’s approach, turning light into a sculptural and sensorial experience that enhances any interior.

The lamp measures 16.5 cm in width, 19.5 cm in depth, and 22 cm in height (approximately 6.5 inches wide, 7.7 inches deep, and 8.7 inches high).
