Information

The rare wall lamps, model V-180, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, exemplify the designer’s talent for crafting lighting fixtures that merge sculptural form with atmospheric function. These pieces are a compelling representation of Scandinavian mid-century design, distinguished by their material richness, balanced proportions, and emphasis on indirect illumination.

The lamps are primarily constructed from polished brass, which serves both structural and reflective roles. A large semi-circular brass reflector extends from the wall mount, curving outward in an elegant arc. This element is central to the lamp’s aesthetic and functional character: it captures and diffuses light emitted from the bulb, softening glare and enhancing the ambient quality of the illumination. Over time, the brass has developed a natural patina, adding visual texture and reinforcing the lamps’ vintage authenticity.

At the heart of each fixture is a spherical glass shade in a distinctive purple-pink hue. The color is both bold and refined, creating a rich contrast with the brass elements while contributing to the lamp’s warm, diffused glow. The globe is seamlessly integrated into the composition, cradled by a cylindrical brass collar that secures it at the base and allows light to radiate in all directions.

A slender, curved brass arm connects the reflector and glass sphere to the wall-mounted base, completing the visual architecture of the lamp. The curvature of the arm, the symmetry of the reflector, and the geometry of the glass globe all work together to produce a cohesive and balanced silhouette. This dynamic interplay of circular and linear elements is characteristic of Jakobsson’s lighting designs, which often explore the sculptural potential of functional forms.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a pivotal figure in Swedish lighting design, known for his emphasis on mood-enhancing illumination and for his ability to manipulate materials—particularly brass, glass, and wood—in expressive and subtle ways. The V-180 model is a testament to his ability to combine decorative elegance with practical effectiveness, suitable for both domestic and architectural interiors.

The condition of these lamps is very good. The brass surfaces exhibit a gentle patina and minor signs of age, enhancing their visual depth. The colored glass spheres are in excellent condition, free from chips, cracks, or notable blemishes, preserving the integrity of the original design.

Each lamp measures 30.5 cm in width, 21 cm in depth, and 35 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 12 inches wide, 8.3 inches deep, and 13.8 inches high.
