Information

This rare wall lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The model combines a warm brass structure with an opaline glass shade, creating a balanced contrast between the reflective metal surface and the softly diffusing glass body. The overall silhouette is compact and sculptural, with a rounded, drop-like shade that widens towards the lower section and finishes in a narrower neck.

The construction features a circular wall backplate in brass connected to the lamp head by a gently curved double-arm bracket. The shade is held by a brass gallery with a perforated decorative band, allowing subtle points of light to appear around the base when illuminated. The opaline glass produces an even and glare-free light distribution, while the pierced brass detail adds a more graphic character and depth to the light effect.

Hans Bergström is regarded as one of the most influential Swedish lighting designers of the mid-century era, particularly known for his refined approach to form, proportion, and atmosphere. His designs often combine decorative metalwork with carefully shaped glass or textile shades, with a focus on achieving a soft and controlled illumination suited to domestic interiors.

ASEA (Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget) was one of Sweden’s leading electrical manufacturers and played an important role in the development of modern lighting during the 20th century. In addition to industrial production, the company collaborated with notable designers and produced lighting fixtures that bridged functional engineering with Scandinavian decorative restraint.

The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and natural patina to the brass surfaces, consistent with age. These traces include minor marks and tonal variation, contributing to an authentic surface character typical for brass from this period.

Dimensions: 13.5 x 23 x 26 cm (5.3 x 9.1 x 10.2 in).
