Hans Wegner AP47 easy chair
This is the very rare easy chair model AP47, also known as the “Queen OX” chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960 and produced by A.P. Stolen in Denmark. The chair is upholstered in its original brown patinated leather and mounted on a brushed steel frame, forming a sculptural expression that balances mass and lightness in one of Wegner’s most expressive lounge designs.
The chair features a voluminous, high-back seat with exaggerated rounded armrests and a slightly reclined profile that provides ergonomic support. The seat has a bold, continuous curvature that cradles the sitter, while the slender tubular steel base offers structural clarity and formal contrast. The exaggerated proportions and humorous character—reminiscent of pop culture and organic forms—distinguish it from Wegner’s more restrained works. This model is the counterpart to the better-known OX chair (AP46), and is often referred to as the “female” version due to its softer visual language and lower height.
The original leather upholstery exhibits a warm, chestnut brown tone with evident signs of age and wear, including creasing, surface cracking, and areas of heavy patina, especially along the armrests and front seat edge. These characteristics are consistent with vintage leather from the period and enhance the chair’s authenticity. The steel base retains its satin finish, showing minor scuffs and oxidation typical of age, but remains structurally stable and true to form.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential figures of 20th-century Danish design, celebrated for his organic functionalism and mastery of form and construction. His collaboration with A.P. Stolen led to the production of several iconic upholstered chairs that pushed the limits of craft, comfort, and expressiveness. A.P. Stolen was a prominent Danish manufacturer during the mid-century period, known for working closely with Wegner to realize his most complex upholstered designs..
The dimensions are 95 cm wide, 95 cm deep, and 89.5 cm high, with a seat height of 33 cm. This corresponds to approximately 37.4 inches in width, 37.4 inches in depth, 35.2 inches in height, and a seat height of 13 inches. The chair is in good vintage condition with original materials and visible signs of wear consistent with use and age.
