Hans Wegner armchair
This rare armchair, model JH-501, better known as The Chair, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 and produced by the cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen. The model quickly became one of the most celebrated examples of Danish modern furniture design, achieving international recognition when used during the televised Kennedy-Nixon presidential debate in 1960, where it came to symbolize the ideals of Scandinavian craftsmanship and democratic design.
The chair is crafted in solid teak with an upholstered seat in original leather. Wegner’s design is characterized by its sculptural yet restrained form, with a continuous curved backrest and arm support shaped from a single piece of wood. The construction reflects the high level of joinery associated with Johannes Hansen’s workshop, which was instrumental in bringing Wegner’s early designs into production and establishing his reputation. The use of teak emphasizes the organic warmth and strength of the material, while the leather seat softens the structure and enhances comfort.
It is in good vintage condition, with signs of age and use and a patina that has developed naturally over time. Surface wear is present on the leather and wood, consistent with prolonged use, contributing to its authenticity and historical presence.
Dimensions: width 63 cm (24.8 in), depth 51 cm (20.1 in), height 76.5 cm (30.1 in), seat height 44 cm (17.3 in).
