Hans Wegner armchair
The rare armchair model JH-505, also known as the Cowhorn Chair, was designed in 1952 by Hans J. Wegner and produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark. It is one of Wegner’s most sculptural and refined seating designs, exemplifying his lifelong pursuit of comfort, organic form, and joinery excellence.
The defining feature of the Cowhorn Chair is its low, curved backrest, shaped like a pair of horns—hence its name. This element not only gives the chair its distinct identity but also serves a functional purpose by integrating seamlessly with the armrests, offering an enveloping, ergonomic support. The sculpted profile of the backrest is crafted with precision and joins the frame through exposed dovetail joints, a hallmark of fine Danish cabinetry. These joints are both structurally functional and aesthetically deliberate, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship involved in its construction.
The frame is made of solid teak, chosen for its rich reddish-brown tone and expressive grain. The wood has developed a soft patina, emphasizing the depth of the material while preserving a smooth, oiled finish. The warm, natural character of the teak complements the light texture of the original woven cane seat, which remains intact and tightly woven. The interplay between the organic curves of the frame and the linear weave of the seat exemplifies the balance of form and function central to Wegner’s work.
In terms of condition, the chair is exceptionally well-preserved. The teak frame shows only minimal signs of age, with a consistent surface and no structural issues. The cane seat retains its original integrity with no visible breaks or sagging, providing both comfort and visual lightness.
Hans Wegner (1914–2007) is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Danish modernism. His collaboration with Johannes Hansen, one of Denmark’s premier cabinetmakers, yielded many of his most iconic and technically demanding pieces. The Cowhorn Chair is a particularly rare model due to the complexity of its construction and the high level of craftsmanship required for its production, making it highly sought after by collectors and institutions alike.
