Hans Wegner armchair
The armchair model JH-501, widely known as “The Chair” was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 and produced by the renowned Danish cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen. The chair’s frame is crafted from solid teak, showcasing a warm reddish-brown tone with subtle grain variations and a rich patina that has developed naturally over decades. The seat is hand-woven from natural cane, maintaining its original tightness and form, with only minor irregularities indicative of careful use and aging.
This design is distinguished by its continuous backrest and armrest element, skillfully formed from a single curved piece of wood. The armrest tapers into smoothly rounded ends that flow seamlessly into the front legs, creating a harmonious and sculptural silhouette. The chair’s profile features soft, organic curves paired with a minimalist approach to lines, demonstrating Wegner’s expertise in merging traditional woodworking techniques with modernist principles. The joinery is executed with precision and is nearly invisible, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship associated with Johannes Hansen’s workshop.
Hans Wegner is celebrated as a pioneer of Danish modern design, renowned for his ability to simplify complex forms into elegant, functional furniture that highlights material integrity and structural clarity. The JH-501 gained international prominence when it was featured during the 1960 U.S. presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, which contributed to its informal moniker “The Chair.” Since then, it has become an iconic symbol in Scandinavian furniture design.
The chair is preserved in very good vintage condition. The teak frame displays light, consistent wear with a well-maintained oil finish that enhances the wood’s natural character. The cane seat remains intact and original, showing slight discoloration typical for natural fibers over time but no damage affecting its functionality or appearance.
The dimensions measure 63 cm in width, 52 cm in depth, and 76.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm, approximately 24.8 inches wide, 20.5 inches deep, 30.1 inches high, and a seat height of 16.9 inches. The design exemplifies a balance of organic form, craftsmanship, and functional comfort characteristic of Wegner’s work.
