Information

This rare armchair model JH-501, also known as “The Chair” was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Originally designed in 1949, the JH-501 has become one of the most iconic pieces of Danish modernism and is a cornerstone of Wegner’s celebrated career. The chair features a frame made from solid teak, with a rich, warm tone and visible grain that has gently patinated over time, reflecting its age and use. The seat is made from the original handwoven cane, crafted from natural fibers that provide both lightness and resilience.

The chair’s backrest is a standout feature, sculpted from a single piece of wood and transitioning smoothly into the armrests, forming a continuous, semicircular curve that embraces the sitter. This ergonomic design offers excellent support and is a defining characteristic of Wegner’s work, showcasing his commitment to creating both functional and aesthetically pleasing furniture.

Hans Wegner (1914–2007) was a central figure in mid-century Scandinavian design, known for his deep understanding of traditional joinery and his ability to combine these techniques with modernist principles. The JH-501 was introduced at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen and quickly became renowned internationally, with its fame further solidified by its appearance during the televised 1960 U.S. presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, giving the chair its enduring nickname.

Produced by Johannes Hansen, a key collaborator of Wegner and one of Denmark’s foremost master cabinetmakers, this chair is a prime example of the high craftsmanship and design innovation of the period. The construction utilizes traditional mortise and tenon joints, executed with exceptional precision and skill.

The chair measures 63 cm in width, 52 cm in depth, and 76.5 cm in height (24.8 x 20.5 x 30.1 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). It remains in very good condition, with light wear to the cane and minor surface marks on the wood, consistent with careful use and its original finish. The frame retains its maker’s mark, “JOHANNES HANSEN, COPENHAGEN, MADE IN DENMARK” beneath the seat.
