Hans Wegner armchairs
This rare pair of armchairs, model JH-701, was designed by Hans Wegner and produced by the renowned Danish cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in the 1960s. The set exemplifies Wegner’s dedication to marrying function with sculptural elegance, reflecting key Scandinavian modernism principles through its organic curves and exceptional craftsmanship.
The armrests are crafted from solid birch and feature delicate inlaid wengé cross details, showcasing Wegner’s keen attention to material contrast and fine woodworking techniques. The backrest is gently curved, offering both aesthetic grace and ergonomic support, seamlessly integrated with a slender tubular steel frame that provides a lightweight yet robust structure. The original leather upholstery on the seats has developed a natural patina over time, adding depth and historical authenticity to the chairs.
Johannes Hansen, a highly respected cabinetmaker in Denmark, was responsible for producing many of Wegner’s iconic designs, maintaining a high standard of quality and precision. The JH-701 model epitomizes the harmonious blend of wood, metal, and leather, central to Wegner’s design philosophy.
The dimensions are 62.5 centimeters in width (24.6 inches), 46 centimeters in depth (18.1 inches), and 68.5 centimeters in height (27 inches), with a seat height of 43 centimeters (16.9 inches), resulting in chairs that are both elegant and comfortable.
