Information

This rare set of six armchairs, model JH-701, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by the esteemed cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs feature a thoughtfully crafted combination of materials, including a tubular steel frame, a sculpted birch backrest with wengé inlays, and original leather upholstery. The model JH-701 is an excellent example of Wegner’s ability to combine organic forms with modernist aesthetics.

The distinctive curved backrest of each chair extends into sculptural armrests, expertly shaped from solid birch. The wengé inlays in the backrest not only reinforce the structure but also serve as a decorative detail, adding to the chair’s visual interest. The use of tubular steel in the frame contributes to the lightness of the design, while the original leather upholstery provides a tactile and comfortable seating experience. Over time, the leather has developed a rich patina, enhancing the vintage charm of the chairs.

Wegner’s work was deeply influenced by his focus on ergonomic design, and the angled legs and floating seat construction of the JH-701 reflect his commitment to comfort and functionality. These armchairs are a perfect example of his mastery in integrating craftsmanship and modern design principles. Wegner’s collaboration with Johannes Hansen, a respected Danish cabinetmaker, resulted in high-quality furniture pieces that blended traditional craftsmanship with modernist innovation.

The chairs remain in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age-related wear. The leather has developed a patina, and there are slight signs of use on the wooden and metal components, which only add to the authenticity and character of the chairs. Despite these minor imperfections, the structure remains stable and the materials retain their integrity.

Each chair measures 62.5 cm (24.6 inches) in width, 46 cm (18.1 inches) in depth, and 70.5 cm (27.8 inches) in height, with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches). These dimensions make the chairs comfortable and well-proportioned, ideal for both dining and casual seating in a variety of settings. This set of six armchairs is a timeless example of Danish modern design, reflecting Hans Wegner’s legacy in creating functional yet sculptural furniture.
