Hans Wegner armchairs
This is a rare and finely crafted set of four armchairs, model JH-525, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by the renowned cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark during the 1950s. Executed in solid oak, the chairs are upholstered in a dark charcoal wool-blend fabric that has been recently renewed.
The JH-525 armchair is part of a complete dining suite that includes a matching set of four chairs. The frame displays a sculptural character with smoothly rounded transitions and precise joinery. The armrests are elegantly curved and taper forward with a gentle ergonomic tilt, integrated seamlessly into the vertical rear posts. The top rail and seat rail incorporate organic contours, enhancing the chair’s visual rhythm while subtly reinforcing its structural function. The seat and backrest are generously padded, offering a combination of support and comfort suited for extended sitting.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a central figure in Danish modern design, known for his pursuit of functional honesty and refined craftsmanship. Model JH-525 is a prime example of Wegner’s ability to merge architectural structure with natural flow and human ergonomics, a hallmark of his best work. Johannes Hansen was one of the most important Danish cabinetmakers of the 20th century and played a pivotal role in promoting modern Danish furniture internationally. His collaboration with Wegner began in the 1940s and included many of Wegner’s most technically demanding and conceptually refined designs. The workshop specialized in handcrafted, limited-edition production for exhibition and elite clientele.
Each chair measures 65 cm in width, 54 cm in depth, and 81 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. In imperial units, that is approximately 25.6 inches wide, 21.3 inches deep, 31.9 inches high, and a seat height of 16.9 inches. The chairs are in excellent condition, structurally sound, with restored surfaces and updated upholstery.
