Information

A rare set of six dining chairs, model CH-31, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1956 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Odense, Denmark. The model reflects Wegner’s refined approach to functional design, where structural clarity and material sensitivity are brought together in a balanced and understated composition.

Each chair is crafted in oak, displaying a warm, honey-toned surface with visible grain variation that enhances the organic character of the wood. The frames are defined by softly rounded edges and subtly tapered legs, contributing to a light and elegant profile while maintaining structural integrity. The joinery is precise and well integrated, with stretchers reinforcing the construction and adding a discreet geometric rhythm beneath the seat.

The seats and backrests are executed in handwoven cane, arranged in a tight, uniform pattern that provides both flexibility and support. The backrest is slightly curved, offering a gentle ergonomic contour, while the seat has a modest concave shaping that enhances comfort. The woven surfaces introduce a tactile contrast to the smooth oak frame and create a visually dynamic interplay of texture and light.

Viewed as a set, the chairs present a cohesive and harmonious expression, where repetition of form and material emphasizes Wegner’s design philosophy rooted in craftsmanship and proportion. The balance between the solid wooden structure and the permeable cane surfaces gives the chairs a sense of visual lightness, making them suitable for both intimate and more spacious dining settings.

The set remains in good vintage condition with signs of age and use. The oak frames show minor wear and a developed patina consistent with time, while the cane has undergone repairs with some strings replaced, maintaining overall functionality and stability while preserving the original character.

Dimensions: 52.5 x 51 x 80.5 cm (20.7 x 20.1 x 31.7 in). Seat height: 43 cm (16.9 in).
