Information

This rare set of six dining chairs, model W2, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by C.M. Madsen in Denmark during the mid-20th century. The W2 model exemplifies the principles of Scandinavian modernism, combining structural clarity, material honesty, and refined craftsmanship.

Each chair is constructed from solid oak, selected for its durability and warm, understated grain. The wood has matured into a soft golden tone, subtly enhanced by age. The frames are characterized by precise joinery and smooth transitions, with softly rounded legs and edge profiles that reflect Wegner’s sensitivity to form and touch. The backrest, shaped with a gentle curvature, is designed for ergonomic support and visual balance. The cane seats are hand-woven in a tight and consistent pattern, offering a breathable and lightweight seating surface that complements the natural oak.

The chairs measure 55.5 cm in width, 46 cm in depth, 75.5 cm in overall height (21.9 x 18.1 x 29.7 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches). These proportions were carefully considered by Wegner to provide comfort while maintaining an elegant and minimal profile.

Condition is excellent throughout, with minimal signs of wear on both the oak and cane components. The woven seats remain taut and undamaged, and the wood surfaces retain a clean, well-maintained finish, suggesting careful handling and limited use.

Hans Wegner was a pivotal figure in 20th-century Danish furniture design, widely regarded for his ability to synthesize traditional woodworking techniques with modernist ideals. Produced by C.M. Madsen, a key manufacturing partner in Wegner’s early career, the W2 chairs represent a thoughtful blend of craftsmanship and design intent, standing as enduring examples of functional beauty in postwar Scandinavian furniture.
