Information

This is a set of twelve dining chairs, model CH-23, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1950 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark. The chairs are crafted in solid oak and teak with woven cane seats. The combination of the two wood species emphasizes Wegner’s understanding of material contrast, where the structural frame in oak meets the darker teak backrest in a balanced and tactile composition.

Each chair displays Wegner’s characteristic craftsmanship, most notably in the finger-jointed connections at the ends of the curved teak backrests. The handwoven cane seats are executed in a traditional Danish pattern that enhances the organic quality of the design while providing both strength and flexibility. Some sections of the cane have been replaced and repaired, consistent with careful preservation of the original structure and technique. The surfaces present a warm, even patina, with signs of age and use appropriate for their vintage condition.

The model CH-23 was among the earliest designs Wegner created for Carl Hansen & Søn and reflects his transition from traditional carpentry into modern industrial production while maintaining artisanal precision. The chair embodies the principles of Danish Modern design, combining functionality, structural honesty, and an appreciation of natural materials. The subtle curves of the backrest and legs, along with the precise joinery, express Wegner’s approach to sculptural form in everyday furniture.

Dimensions: 52.5 cm wide, 48 cm deep, 77 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm (20.7 x 18.9 x 30.3 in, seat height 16.5 in).
