Hans Wegner easy chair
This rare model 1936 shell easy chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark during the early 1950s. The frame is crafted from solid beech, with molded teak veneer forming the backrest and seat. The design reflects Wegner’s early experimentation with form-pressed plywood and organic shaping, creating an open, lightweight frame that is defined by softly rounded lines and tapered legs. The backrest is particularly notable for its distinctly asymmetric curve, a characteristic element of Wegner’s design that reflects both his sensitivity to ergonomics and his focus on visual rhythm.
The chair retains its original checked upholstery in beige and brown tones, which has aged gracefully, showing minor wear and natural patina. Despite the age of the fabric, the foam padding remains intact, providing comfort and support. The upholstery is removable, allowing access to the full wooden surface beneath, further emphasizing the chair’s thoughtful design and construction.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in 20th-century Danish furniture design, contributing significantly to the organic modernism movement. With a background as a trained cabinetmaker, Wegner merged traditional craftsmanship with functionalist principles. He is best known for his chair designs, many of which have become iconic within modern design.
Fritz Hansen, founded in 1872, is a key Danish furniture manufacturer known for its role in the rise of Scandinavian Modern design. The company’s collaborations with designers like Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, and Hans J. Wegner have solidified its reputation for high-quality materials and refined Danish craftsmanship.
The dimensions of the easy chair are 75 cm in width, 58 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 29.5 inches wide, 22.8 inches deep, and 28 inches high. The seat height is 38 cm, or 15 inches.
