Hans Wegner sofa
This rare sofa, model JH-555, was designed by Hans Wegner and produced by the cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark in 1949. It represents an early and exceptional example of Wegner’s skill in combining traditional woodworking craftsmanship with a modern focus on ergonomics and aesthetic clarity.
The sofa’s frame is constructed from solid oak, showcasing the wood’s natural warmth, grain, and durability. Its angular construction is both visually striking and structurally robust, featuring sculptural joinery that emphasizes an architectural silhouette. Notably, the rear legs extend seamlessly into the backrest, creating a continuous and dynamic flow that enhances the sofa’s compositional balance. Crossed stretchers at the base contribute additional stability while reinforcing the piece’s refined geometric form.
The seat and backrest retain their original black leather upholstery, which has aged with grace, developing a rich patina that adds depth and character. The leather is secured along the edges with brass nails, a detail that highlights the piece’s craftsmanship and durability while also serving as a decorative accent.
Designed in 1949, this sofa embodies the core principles of Scandinavian modernism, where functionality and beauty are integrated in a harmonious design. Its dimensions are 145 centimeters in width (57.1 inches), 77 centimeters in depth (30.3 inches), 77.5 centimeters in height (30.5 inches), with a seat height of 39 centimeters (15.4 inches).
