Hans Wegner sofa
This model GE-240 three-seat sofa, commonly known as the “Cigar” sofa, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1950s. The sofa features a solid oak frame, distinguished by its cigar-shaped armrests, which lend the piece its informal name. The wood has developed a warm, medium-toned patina, highlighting the natural grain of the oak. The backrest consists of upright vertical slats, and the tapered, angled legs and armrest supports exhibit Wegner’s sculptural approach to functionalism. These elements together create a sense of both strength and grace, a hallmark of Wegner’s designs.
The seat and back cushions have been reupholstered in a charcoal or dark graphite-grey fabric, which aligns with the sofa’s mid-century aesthetic while providing modern comfort. The cushions are squared, with softened edges, and are supported within a wooden framework that subtly cradles them. The seating angle is moderately reclined, contributing to a relaxed and comfortable sitting posture, which is characteristic of Wegner’s focus on ergonomic design.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most prominent figures in Danish modern design. Known for his mastery of chair and seating design, Wegner’s approach combined exceptional craftsmanship with a refined aesthetic rooted in simplicity and organic form. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later as an architect, Wegner’s works reflect an innovative approach to ergonomics and a deep respect for materials. His partnership with Getama is particularly notable, with the GE-240 being a prime example of Wegner’s ability to blend functionality and beauty in furniture design.
Getama, founded in 1899 in Gedsted, Denmark, began as a mattress factory before expanding into furniture production. The company’s collaboration with Hans Wegner in the 1950s proved highly successful, and the GE-240 sofa is one of the notable outcomes of this partnership. The sofa embodies Getama’s woodworking excellence and Wegner’s design principles, bringing together both craftsmanship and timeless design.
Belonging to the mid-century Scandinavian modern tradition, the sofa places a strong emphasis on natural materials, clean lines, and comfort. The exposed joinery and visible structural elements reflect the honesty of the materials and the integrity of the design, characteristics that firmly place this piece within the mid-century modern ethos.
The overall dimensions of the sofa are 175 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height. The seat height is 38 cm. In imperial units, these dimensions correspond to approximately 68.9 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, and 28.3 inches high, with a seat height of 15 inches. The piece is in excellent structural condition, with minimal wear to the frame and newly reupholstered cushions, maintaining its functional and aesthetic integrity.
