Information

This three-seat sofa, model AP-64, was made in 1965 by Hans J. Wegner and produced by A.P. Stolen in Denmark. Its low-slung, rectilinear silhouette is crafted from solid oak, whose warm honey tones have mellowed to a soft amber patina over decades of careful use. The frame’s clean lines are softened by gently tapered legs, each joined through visible mortise-and-tenon construction that underscores the piece’s structural clarity and the maker’s commitment to time-honored joinery techniques.

The seating is upholstered in rich cognac-colored leather, its surface exhibiting subtle variations in shade where the hide has developed a supple patina. Three separate seat cushions rest upon a robust hardwood subframe, their interiors supported by hidden webbing that balances resilience with gentle give. The back cushions mirror the seat in depth and proportion, and their slightly flared angle creates a welcoming recline. The armrests, fully wrapped in leather, curve softly outward before terminating in a smooth, rounded edge that conveys both comfort and precision workmanship.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a luminary of Danish modern design, renowned for his ability to fuse organic comfort with sculptural restraint. With the AP-64, he translated these ideals into a generously proportioned sofa that nonetheless retains an airy lightness. His exploration of seating ergonomics is evident in the sofa’s measured recline, the form of its cushions, and the seamless integration of upholstery into the frame.

A.P. Stolen, active in Denmark throughout the mid-20th century, partnered closely with Wegner to ensure faithful executions of his visions. Their craftsmen combined machine-precision milling with hand-applied finishes, resulting in furniture that balances industrial consistency with artisanal nuance. On this sofa, the leather upholstery is tensioned uniformly, and the oak frame bears a hand-rubbed oil finish that accentuates the wood grain without obscuring its natural texture.

This example remains in very good vintage condition. The leather shows gentle creasing and surface patina typical of authentic, long-term use, while the oak retains its structural integrity and shows only minor surface wear. There are no tears, cracks, or repairs evident. Its dimensions measure 220 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 75 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm—approximately 86.6 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, 29.5 inches high, and a 16.5-inch seat height—offering a harmonious balance of generous proportions and refined detailing.
