Information

This rare pair of lounge chairs, commonly known as the Flag Halyard Chair, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1950s. The design stands apart within Wegner’s body of work, as it departs from his otherwise extensive use of wood and cabinetmaking traditions, instead emphasizing industrial materials and a more experimental approach to comfort and structure.

The chairs are constructed around a welded metal frame with an angular yet balanced geometry, finished in a dark-toned surface. The seat and back are formed by tightly woven flagline cord in a warm natural brown tone, creating a resilient and flexible support surface. Chrome-plated steel armrests extend outward in a continuous, tubular form, defining the chair’s silhouette and providing a visual contrast to the softer materials. The reclining surface is complemented by loose cushions in light fabric, and the chairs are shown with sheepskin coverings, adding texture and visual warmth to the otherwise restrained palette. Small wooden elements are integrated at contact points, reflecting Wegner’s continued sensitivity to material transitions even in a predominantly metal-based design.

Hans J. Wegner designed the Flag Halyard Chair in 1950, reportedly inspired by a moment of rest on the beach, where he sketched the concept directly in the sand. The chair represents Wegner’s exploration of leisure seating, prioritizing relaxation and ergonomics while maintaining a clear structural logic. Getama, a long-term collaborator with Wegner, was responsible for producing the chair with a high level of technical precision, ensuring durability and consistency in the woven construction and metalwork.

The chairs are in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of use consistent with age. The metal frames remain stable, the flagline is intact and evenly tensioned, and the cushions and surfaces show light wear without damage. Overall, the condition reflects careful use and preservation over time.

Each chair measures approximately 106 cm in width, 118 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, with a seat height of about 37 cm. In inches, this corresponds to roughly 41.7 inches wide, 46.5 inches deep, and 31.5 inches high, with a seat height of approximately 14.6 inches.
