Henry Rosengren Hansen dining table
This rare dining table was designed by Henry Rosengren Hansen and produced by Brande Møbelindustri in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed entirely from solid rosewood and rosewood veneer, the table exemplifies Danish mid-century craftsmanship, combining structural refinement with rich material expression.
The table features a circular top in its compact configuration, with finely grained rosewood laid out in symmetrical book-matched veneers. The wood displays deep, reddish-brown tonal variation with black streaks and complex grain patterns that are characteristic of old-growth rosewood. The table expands via two integrated extension leaves, transforming its geometry from a round to a long oval form. This flexible format enhances its utility, making it equally suited for smaller settings or large gatherings.
The table stands on four solid rosewood legs, each elegantly tapered and slightly faceted. The transition from leg to apron is handled with care, featuring subtle joinery that highlights the material continuity and craftsmanship. The top edge of the apron is delicately rounded, softening the silhouette and adding an element of tactile comfort. In its extended form, the table is supported by a discreet fold-out leg set beneath the central section for added structural stability.
Dimensions are as follows: the table measures 120 cm in diameter (47.2 inches) in its round form and extends to a full length of 270 cm (106.3 inches) with leaves installed. The height is 71.5 cm (28.1 inches), appropriate for standard dining seating. These proportions offer generous seating capacity and a balanced visual scale in both configurations.
Henry Rosengren Hansen was known for his rigorous attention to form and proportion, and his designs often exhibit a structural clarity aligned with the ideals of Danish modernism. Brande Møbelindustri, an important Danish manufacturer active in the mid-20th century, produced furniture for several leading designers and is known for its commitment to detail and material excellence.
The table is in good condition, with a well-preserved finish and consistent color throughout the rosewood surfaces. Minor signs of age and use are present, including faint surface marks and light wear along edges, but the structure remains stable and the finish intact. The extension mechanism operates smoothly, and all joints and supports are solid.
This table is offered with a matching set of eight chairs, which further enhance the ensemble’s architectural unity. As a whole, the piece is a strong representation of Danish cabinetmaking from the 1960s.
