Henry Walter Klein sideboard
This very rare sideboard, designed by Henry Walter Klein and produced by Bramin Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s, is a sophisticated example of Scandinavian modernism, distinguished by its material richness, clean lines, and impeccable craftsmanship. Klein, a Norwegian-born designer trained under Finn Juhl, was known for creating furniture that balanced function with refined aesthetics, and this piece clearly reflects that ethos.
Crafted from highly figured rosewood, the sideboard features a striking visual surface with a warm, deep patina that accentuates the natural grain patterns and tonal variations of the wood. The cabinet’s proportions are generous yet restrained, maintaining a sense of balance and elegance throughout. Its minimalist form is softened by thoughtful detailing and material interplay, making it both visually engaging and highly functional.
The front of the sideboard is divided into two distinct zones: the left side comprises four horizontal drawers with recessed pulls carved directly into the fronts, preserving the clean, uninterrupted flow of the wood grain. The right side features a double-door cabinet section with sculptural steel handles, adding a subtle modernist contrast and a touch of textural complexity to the otherwise organic composition.
Behind the cabinet doors, the interior is lined in oak and fitted with adjustable shelving, allowing for flexible storage solutions. The craftsmanship is evident not only in the seamless joinery and well-balanced proportions but also in the careful consideration given to the usability and durability of the piece.
Elevated on gracefully tapered solid rosewood legs, the sideboard achieves a lightness that belies its size. The raised structure not only enhances its architectural presence but also reinforces the Scandinavian preference for furniture that interacts with its surrounding space, rather than dominating it.
Measuring 225 cm in width, 44 cm in depth, and 77.5 cm in height (88.6 x 17.3 x 30.5 inches), the sideboard is well-suited to a variety of environments—from formal dining rooms to open-plan living areas—where its refined silhouette and storage capacity can be appreciated.
The piece is in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with age and careful use. Its patina and preserved finish contribute to its authenticity and underscore its desirability as a collector’s item.
